It's Friday morning, we are waking up because it's pretty hot in the tent. We opened the tent and it's really nice weather outside, the sun is reflecting on the sea surface, no wind. We're having a breakfast and we think that our first camping beyond the Arctic Circle couldn't be better. We are in a great mood, we plan to take a trip around the island today.
It's surprisingly warm weather, we packed the tent and we are going to try the water in the sea. We went to the same place where i washed the kettle yesterday. The water is crystal clear and with the rocky beach it all creates really beautiful landscape. The rocks go till the water and then there is white sand on the bottom of the sea. The water is cold, it has about 15°C in the summer, so we cleaned our teeth and try the water only by feet.
We packed our backpacks and we are moving on. We're going to the road where we turned off it yesterday. The road goes from the harbor, where we arrived yesterday, across the village and finally to the hills, where is NATO radar.
We want to go on top of the hill, where the radar is, because there should be great view almost around the whole island. Before we start to go up we are asking few people if there is some stream with water to drink. We have a luck, there is one in the middle of hill near the path we want to go.
So we started to go up, it's really difficult because our heavy bags. But every meter we are climbing up it starts to open another great view to village and sea. After a while we are at the stream, filling our bottles and having a shower, the water is incredibly cold. After a bath we are going up and the path is connecting to the road. The road was build because of the radar.
At times we stop and take a picture of that beautiful landscape what's behind us. It's really warm weather and the hill is pretty steep. We meet few people, who also want to go on top and people who already been there. It's about 0.5 km to the top and there is a sign which says "Cameras prohibited" that's because of the military radar, so we pack our cameras. What a pitty, there are really nice views from the top. And now we can see the southern part of this island. You can see almost whole island from here.
On the southern edge of this hill we can see the beautiful sandy beach and the blue sea down there. We met two Norwegian guys resting on the top and they told us about the southern part of this island more. At the southern part of the island we saw village called Måstad, there is no road to this village only a rocky path going around all island. Most people used to reach this village by boat. There lived about one hundred people some decade ago, mostly fishermen, but now it's almost abandoned. There is also a school. We asked if they know something about ferry's departures, but with no luck. They say there is some change in schedule since today's date. We think about staying there one more day, but who knows if there will be some ferry tomorrow. We would really like to see Måstad.
We are on the way back going on the road, but after few hundred meters we are turned on the other side of the hill with the ocean.
The views to the ocean are awesome, that's for the firs time I'm seeing this, but it looks almost the same as i imagined it. Beautiful! We are following the path which runs along the coast and below us is noisy ocean. In the right moment we can see the Lofoten on the horizon between the hills of the Værøya.
On the hills that we are going by, blueberries grow everywhere.
We are going down to lower part between two hills. From there we can see the ocean on the left side and village of Værøya on the right side. We have a break there and we make a lunch. After short rest we left our baggage there and we want to go to near top to look around there if it's possible to shorten our way to southern part of the island without going long way around. If there is some shortcut, we could make it to the southern part of island today and we could catch the ferry as well.
We are on the top and the view is so nice, we can see Lofoten and a little island in front of them called Mosken. We try to watch for some shortcut and there seems to be one, a ravine. We are going closer to look, but sadly the ravine is to steep to walk, it looks risky.
We decided that we'll try to catch the ferry to Lofoten today. We lost one day in Oslo and we want to enjoy Lofoten as well. We don't know if ferry goes at the weekend, so it would be risk to stay there one more day.
I am a little sad because i was really looking forward to see a view from Måstad. It was the main reason why i wanted to go to Værøya. But at all, we had nice weather there, great camping and great trip today. :)
So we are now going down back to village and to the harbor. We are passing by a shop and trying to ask about ferry departures, but the English language seems to be problem here. There live elder people and not everyone speaks English.
In the harbor we meet the truck driver and he helps us, he knows the ferry departures. So we have two hours to wait, we are glad that we will get to Lofoten today.
We are sleeping in the waiting room and charging our mobiles. In a while a group of French tourists comes there. They finished their two weeks trip to Lofoten here on Værøya. We talk about our trips but we are too tired to socialize. So we go out and have a little walk in harbor. When the ferry comes, we say good bye to Værøya and sail to Lofoten, tired and full of expectation.
The sail takes an hour. We are relaxing and watching online athletics games from Oslo. There is nice interruption when captain announces the whales on the right side of the boat. The whales are pretty far from us, but we are able to recognize their big tails. We are approaching to Moskenes harbor.
